SMaSH 77 IPA Recipe
There’s nothing easier than a SMaSH recipe. SMaSH is short for single malt and single hop. It’s one of the best ways to get a feel for a certain base malt or hop. They can also be super cheap as you’ll be avoiding pricier specialty grains. The key to a good SMaSH is picking a hop that can provide plenty of flavor and aroma without overpowering your malt. A quick google search will provide you with some good malt and hop combos if you’re stuck.

My SMaSH 77 IPA recipe consists of Canadian 2 row for the malt and Cascade for the hops. I feel that Canadian 2 row provides a good bit more flavor than other 2 rows while the Cascade serves up a pleasant floral to citrus grapefruit flavor. The recipe was built for 77 IBU’s and 7.7% abv but I ended up with a higher efficiency than expected. Overall everything came out great and I was amazed at how much flavor came out of such a simple recipe. I’ll definitely be brewing this one again when I get another batch of Cascade.
On a final note, Don’t forget your Whirlfloc as I did!
Color / Aroma / Flavor:
The liquid is golden yellow with a finger of quick fading white head. Aroma is sweet malt and grapefruit citrus. Taste is sweet malt with a punch of citrus and floral hoppiness.
